Artist Statement

The influence that is perhaps the most readily apparent in my painting is that of vintage poster art. This artistic genre captures a heightened sense of romanticism by portraying idyllic scenes and experiences. The combination of striking graphical compositions with bold color never fails to evoke an emotional response from the viewer. Although this artistic movement has all but died out, nostalgia for times past has led in recent years to a greater appreciation of the style.

However, my intent is not to attempt to create art that looks as if it belongs to a bygone era. Instead, I combine the idyllic sentiments of the past with contemporary influences in order to create a unique and timeless image. It is deeply challenging to create the various moods and patterns of light while using the flat and homogenous colors characteristic to this style. I am also fascinated with the shapes of nature, and I challenge myself by searching for the simple geometric patterns hidden in the rich and complex array of objects in the natural world.

As an artist who lives and works in the natural splendor of the Colorado Rockies, I am compelled to incorporate the beauty of my surroundings into my work. It is my intent that my artwork inspires people to explore, experience, and come to a greater appreciation of this world we all share.

More About Me

I grew up drawing in the suburbs of Chicago, then attended the Savannah College of Art and Design in Georgia where I studied illustration. I subsequently moved to Los Angeles where I became an animator for Nickelodeon, designing backgrounds for Hey Arnold and Oswald the Octopus. It was while I was living in California that my fascination with the natural world began to develop. It was one specific camping trip to Yosemite that I realized my love for the mountains, so I eventually packed my bags and moved to Colorado. It was this transition that inspired me to begin working in my current style of painting. I live in Boulder, Colorado with my dog, Zephyr.
